History of Peanut Butter

The history of peanut butter is not very clear.  Although peanuts have been used throughout history, most uses bear little resemblance to our modern peanut butter.  Around 1890, a doctor in St. Louis began to recommend ground peanuts as a protein supplement to his patients who couldn’t chew meat.

Peanut butter history was made in 1884 with the first peanut butter patent.  It was issued to Marcellus Gilmore Edson of Montreal.  He roasted the peanuts and ground them until they reached “a consistency like that of butter”.  This peanut paste was used for candy, but Edson’s work paved the way for modern peanut butter to be developed.
